Free, on-device voice dictation for Mac. Hold the keyboard shortcut and speak; text lands at your cursor in any app.
Overview
The Rekody homepage
Rekody is free, open-source voice dictation software for macOS. Hold the Option-Space shortcut and speak; your words appear in real-time as you talk and land at your cursor in any app when you release.
All transcription happens on your device by default with no account, telemetry, or audio saved. The MIT-licensed code is available on GitHub so you can verify how it works. Cloud engines are optional and require your own key.
You can hold the shortcut to dictate and release to submit, or tap it to go hands-free for longer dictation. The app runs on macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, installs in about a minute, and offers a command-line interface via Homebrew for terminal users.

Buyer questions
How do I start dictating with Rekody?
Hold Option-Space and speak. Your words appear live as you talk, and the text lands where your cursor is when you release or pause.
Where is my audio stored?
Your audio never leaves your device. Your dictation history is stored locally, and you can delete any entry or all of them at any time. There are no accounts and no tracking.
What should I do if Rekody won't record?
Check that microphone access is on for Rekody in your system settings. The app shows a reminder if it's off.
Does Rekody require an internet connection?
You need a network connection for the one-time download of the on-device voice model during setup. After that, dictation runs fully offline with no network calls.
Why doesn't Rekody work in password fields?
Rekody turns itself off in password and other secure fields on purpose for security. Switch to a normal text field and it comes back.
