Textfold is a privacy-first text expander for Mac that replaces short abbreviations with full text, in any app. Snippets can include fill-in forms, dates with math, passwords, clipboard content and cursor placement. Every snippet is stored as a plain .txt file in a folder you choose, so you can edit them in any text editor and sync with iCloud Drive, Dropbox or git. The app has no account, no analytics, and keeps everything on your Mac. It imports snippets from TextExpander, Raycast, Alfred, Espanso, aText and Apple Text Replacements. Free for 10 snippets with every feature, Pro is a one-time purchase.

Is Textfold a subscription?
No. Textfold Pro is a one-time purchase, and every 1.x update is included. The free plan has every feature with up to 10 active snippets, for as long as you like.
Does anything I type leave my Mac?
No. Textfold has no analytics and no account. It only goes online to check for updates and, if you bought Pro, to verify your license. The privacy policy lists exactly what is sent.
Which apps does Textfold work in?
Textfold works anywhere you can type text, including Mail, Notes, Safari, Chrome, Slack, Notion, VS Code, Terminal, and Microsoft Office. You can switch it off for specific apps or limit snippets to chosen apps.
What happens when 2.0 comes out?
Your license never expires, so the version you have keeps working either way. Every 1.x update is included. If you buy Pro by October 13, 2027, the first 12 months after launch, 2.0 is free too. After that, a major new version may be a paid upgrade, and you only pay if you want what's new. There's no 2.0 planned yet: everything on the roadmap is coming as free 1.x updates.
Why does it need the Accessibility permission?
To notice when you finish typing an abbreviation, Textfold has to see your keystrokes — that's what the Accessibility permission allows. It keeps only the last few characters in memory, never writes them to disk and never sends them anywhere. In password fields macOS hides typing from every app, so Textfold pauses there.
