Error tracking & observability

Trace

Analytics for coding agents to read and fix problems

Open-source analytics that finds dead clicks, rage clicks, errors and drop-offs, hands them to your coding agent over MCP, and checks whether each fix worked.

Overview

The Trace homepage

Trace is analytics built for AI agents. A lightweight 8.4 KB script measures user behavior in the browser—pageviews, clicks, scrolls, forms and errors. A Rust server aggregates and ranks problems by the number of visits they hurt. Your coding agent reads the totals over MCP, proposes fixes with evidence, and Trace checks whether they worked after release.

It works with Claude Code, Cursor or any MCP client. Goals live in your trace.json file alongside your code, reviewed in pull requests. The system includes a Welch test to verify fixes with statistical rigor over 14-day periods, avoiding false positives from lucky weeks.

Trace never stores request bodies, parameters, headers, cookies, environment variables or source code. Personal data like emails and phone numbers are scrubbed in the browser and again on the server. You choose hosted (free for 1 site and 100,000 events per month) or self-hosted open-source with no limits.

Capabilities

  • Server error tracking for Rust, Node.js and Ruby with backtrace, route and release context
  • Groups errors by class and first frame of own code
  • Ties errors to visits to show how many visits each error broke
  • Tracks clicks, scrolls, rage clicks, dead clicks and form steps
  • Goals as code in trace.json with conversion and error rate targets
  • Statistical significance testing with Welch test over 14-day periods
  • MCP integration with Claude Code, Cursor and other agents
  • Scrubs personal data like emails and phone numbers on browser and server
  • Daily-salted hash for visitor identification without storing IP addresses

Buyer questions

What counts as an event?

A pageview, a click, a scroll mark, a form step, an error or an event you send. Every click counts, so a busy page uses more events than a quiet one.

What happens at the limit?

Your website is never affected. Trace stops recording until next month and tells you how much it skipped.

Do I pay for the AI?

Not to us. Analysis runs in your own coding agent, on the plan you already have.

Can I move from hosted to self-hosted?

Yes. It is the same software. Your trace.json and tag stay the same; only the server address changes.

What data is never sent to Trace?

Request bodies, parameters and query strings, headers and cookies, environment and local variables, and source code or host names are never sent. Emails, tokens, card numbers and phone-like numbers are scrubbed before data leaves the browser.
