Hushbox lets you lock any file or folder on your Mac directly from the Finder right-click menu. The locked item stays where you keep it, and its contents disappear from Spotlight, Recents and file previews until you unlock it using Touch ID or your Hushbox password.

Every locked item is encrypted using AES-256, the same encryption macOS uses for its own disk images. There is no account, no cloud, and nothing unencrypted sits on your disk. Unlocked items open in a private encrypted space that Spotlight never indexes.

Hushbox locks automatically when your screen locks, when your Mac sleeps, or after an idle time you choose (5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes). You can also lock manually from the menu bar or right-click menu. If an app has unsaved work, Hushbox asks before locking.

The app includes a single password that opens all your locked items, with Touch ID available for faster access. If you ever need to access a locked item without Hushbox, you can rename it and open it as a standard encrypted disk image using macOS alone.

How do I open a locked item?

Double-click the locked item, or right-click and choose Unlock. Then use Touch ID or your Hushbox password. A folder opens in its own Finder window and a file opens in its app. The contents open in a private encrypted space that Spotlight never indexes.

Can I open a locked item without Hushbox?

Yes. A locked item is an AES-256 encrypted disk image that macOS can open. Rename it to end in .sparsebundle, double-click it, enter your password, and macOS opens it without Hushbox.

What if I forget my password?

There is no back door and no password recovery. Keep your Hushbox password somewhere safe, such as a password manager. Hushbox keeps older passwords only to open older copies of an item, such as Time Machine restores.

Does anything leave my Mac?

No. Everything happens on your Mac. There is no account and no cloud. Hushbox only contacts Dodo Payments to activate or check a license.

Is this a subscription?

No. Hushbox is $9 once for 2 Macs, and updates are free.
